What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese technique for relaxation and stress reduction that promotes the body's natural ability to heal itself. Life force energy, commonly referred to as chi, ki or prana, flows through pathways in and around the bodies of all living things. Stressors and traumas of everyday life can impede the freedom of this energy to flow properly. Over time and if left untreated, the energy becomes more blocked along these pathways and emotional, mental and physical symptoms may occur. Reiki works to help restore the energy flow to its optimum state which supports the body’s natural healing mechanisms. It addresses issues affecting the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels without even discussing or having to determine what the issues or causes may be. It promotes overall well-being and balance.
Reiki is not religious and requires no beliefs, therefore it is effective for people regardless of age, background or beliefs they have. Learning Reiki is also suitable for all and requires no change in your spiritual or religious life.
What is Usui/Holy Fire® III Reiki?
There are a variety of styles of Reiki. Andrea practices and teaches a style of Reiki known as Holy Fire® III. It incorporates traditional Usui Reiki with an energy that is noticeably more refined and comes from a higher level of consciousness than what we have previously seen in other styles. The word "holy" in the name refers to the root word meaning whole or complete.
Some of the qualities clients, practitioners and students have reported:
Works continuously even when not thinking about it and spontaneously heals issues as they come up.
Heals deeply and quickly without distress.
Heals relationships and interactions with others.
Releases worry and replaces it with a sense of safety in a most pronounced way.
Spontaneously provides guidance that is palatable for every level of life experience.
Tends to develop all the personality traits that are healthy for a person to have such as love of self and others, kindness, patience, confidence, vitality, enthusiasm, optimism, trust, joy, peace and so forth.
One of the more wonderful effects is a feeling of being loved. This is a deep and refined feeling that is very nurturing.
Once a student receives Holy Fire® III training, the energy continues to develop itself to be more evolved and effective.
These qualities are present in Reiki I & II and become more pronounced in the subsequent levels of Reiki training.
Andrea believes the source of Reiki is unlimited, therefore, the evolution of Reiki energy is also unlimited. Holy Fire® III Reiki is the most current and highest vibration Reiki she has experienced and that is why she exclusively teaches Holy Fire® III Reiki - beginning November 2018. Frequently Asked Questions
How is Reiki administered?
Reiki practitioners do not share their personal life force energy with you. Instead, they are trained to access pure life force energy from its source and offer it to you through the palms of the hands. Practitioners utilize different hand positions to treat the whole body. Hands can either lightly touch the body or be held above the body. There is no tissue manipulation as in massage and clients remain fully clothed.
Reiki Treatments at the office: Andrea sees clients in her office in Saline, Michigan (near Ann Arbor). She has both a private waiting room and relaxing treatment room prepared for you. She discusses what has brought you in for Reiki and any intentions you may have for your session. She will also ask if you would like her to perceive the overall flow of your energy system and what may be affecting your energy flow while you are receiving Reiki. If so, the last 15 minutes of your appointment will be used to discuss this. She often shares practical things you might do to support the positive effects of the Reiki treatment and to help you move forward in a noticeable way. You are welcome to audio record this portion of the session with your phone, if you wish. Many clients find this helpful to reference later. If you are not interested in Andrea's assessment, the Reiki treatment will last longer with little discussion. Regular appointments last 75 minutes but a longer session combined with a healing meditation experience is also available.
Reiki Treatments in Medical Settings: Reiki has been scientifically proven to reduce pain and cut down on the need for pain medication. In addition, patients who receive Reiki in the hospital go home earlier on average when compared to patients who do not receive Reiki. See the Reiki research page for a list of scientific journal articles based on research.
Andrea has performed Reiki for clients who are recovering in the hospital. If you or a loved one would like to schedule a session as an inpatient or for pre-op and/or post-op or outpatient physical rehab, please contact her to arrange this type of appointment. Fees are based on session length and location plus travel time. (The Try Reiki Special does not apply).
Distance Reiki: Enjoy the benefits of Reiki no matter where you live! These sessions are powerful and unique in that you may receive the full benefits of a Reiki session while in your own environment. There is no driving or preparation for you to do and because Reiki is energy, it is not limited by distance from the practitioner. Prayer and sending positive thoughts to support others are similar examples of this phenomenon but instead, it is Reiki that is used for the benefit of the receiver. Before we begin your appointment, we will discuss any intentions you may have for the session. Feel free to schedule online, or call or text to arrange a time for your session. The fee for distant Reiki is $65 and sessions are 75 minutes total.
What is required of someone to benefit from Reiki?
Nothing is required but being open for positive change. Children and animals also benefit from Reiki. Anyone from any background or belief system may be helped and anyone can learn Reiki to help themselves or others (see more about learning Reiki below).
What does Reiki feel like during the session?
Perceptions vary from person to person. However, deep relaxation is most widely reported. Often other feelings include warmth, cold, feeling very light or heavy and tingling. People often see colors with their eyes closed. Whether a person feels a lot or a little does not indicate the amount of help Reiki is giving. Awareness varies from person to person and in each session. Reiki works on all levels, some of which are very deep and outside of our awareness. Some people relax into sleep which is perfectly fine and does not effect the treatment in any way.
What will I feel like after the session?
After Reiki, people often report feeling lighter as if a burden has been lifted. It is also common to feel well-rested and more balanced and easy going. The number of days or weeks these feelings last depend on each person. We are all unique and are dealing with different stressors and situations in our lives. Furthermore, our ability to cope also varies. During your session, Andrea is able to assess and recommend when a follow up session would be most appropriate. This ranges from a week, two weeks, etc. all the way up to when you feel it is time. After all, something brought you in for Reiki, so it is important to listen to your inner wisdom. (More about how many sessions are needed further down this page or click HERE.) On occasion, a person may feel a bit down or moody for 1-2 days after Reiki. This is a normal reaction due to emotional and mental processing as issues healed in the session are preparing to release. When the process completes, a person may wake up in the morning feeling much better than before their Reiki session. In other cases, they may experience a noticeable lifting feeling as their mood shifts into a state much better than before the Reiki treatment. Sometimes, a person may experience a headache, stomachache, or feel tired. This is due to an influx of stored toxins into the bloodstream from blocked energy releasing. The body will flush these out and it is recommended to rest and drink more water for a few days. If this or a the moodiness occurs, it is actually a positive sign that much healing is taking place.
Is Reiki Safe?
Reiki is absolutely safe because it is a practice based solely on life force energy which is naturally inherent in all living things. It cannot do harm and is safe for babies, children, expectant mothers, people of any age or state of health, plants and animals. Reiki practitioners do not prescribe substances nor interfere in any medical treatments. Reiki is a complement to traditional care and never a replacement. That is why it is referred to as a complementary therapy and not an alternative therapy.
Can Reiki cure diseases and illness?
Reiki is a complement to traditional medical care and we do not promote it as a cure for particular diseases or conditions. However, patients receiving Reiki often report an easier time coping with medical treatments, pain reduction, a more positive outlook, and an increased ability to handle stress. These effects can support a person on their healing path and enable their own bodies to respond more positively to medical treatments. It is for these reasons that an increasing number of health care facilities are promoting Reiki through their own programs. Visit the Mainstream Reiki Facebook page for posts relating to Reiki research, Reiki programs and Reiki in the news.
Do I need many sessions to see an improvement?
Reiki is gentle but powerful and one session often delivers noticeable improvement. However, when we receive Reiki in sessions that are closer together, we see increased benefit. How many sessions depends on you and what types of conditions have brought you to Reiki. A person with a chronic disease will have different needs than someone who is recovering from an injury, surgery or has anxiety. You are complex and unique in so many ways, therefore, it is not really possible to assign a number.
Andrea assesses your energy flow at each visit and offers her recommendations to you based on that information and your feedback. She usually recommends to begin with sessions closer together in the beginning to help you maintain balance in your energy system. As your body gets used to being in balance, it can then stay in balance more easily on its own and return visits are stretched out over time.
The goal is to reach a maintenance Reiki schedule that you feel best supports your well-being and your personal self-care goals. Andrea has clients who prefer to come once or twice per month for maintaining wellness and support.
Frequency depends on age, health concerns and stress levels but mostly it is in your hands. Of course, you can simply return whenever you feel it is time and many clients do just that.
Just remember that it took time for the imbalances to occur and manifest into how you are feeling, so it is understandable that multiple sessions may be the most beneficial in reversing these imbalances. Reiki, like all paths to wellness, takes time for true benefits to take root. This is true for any healthy practice such as exercise, meditation, or taking supplements.
Who can learn Reiki?
Reiki is truly available to all people. If you want to learn it, you can. It's that simple. The ability to channel Reiki is never lost but a person gains confidence and understanding of Reiki through practice.
How is Reiki taught?
Andrea teaches Reiki in person and follows the guidelines set forth by the International Center for Reiki Training. She supplies each student with a comprehensive and detailed manual published by the ICRT and each class is comprised of lecture, practice time and experiences to support students in becoming effective and knowledgeable Reiki practitioners. She brings her years of experience and training to her classes and considers it an honor to teach all levels of Reiki.
While distance healing is part of Reiki and learned in Reiki level II, Andrea believes that teaching and learning Reiki is best done in person. No level of internet or distant learning can take the place of the connection and experience an in-person class offers. It is out of respect for both Reiki and students of Reiki that Andrea holds classes together in a group setting.
